Why it's a good car
The 2012 model year carries the later, revised version of VW's 2.5-liter inline-five. The earlier 2005–2011 versions had a documented timing-chain-tensioner weakness that VW redesigned; the 2012 reflects that fix, and owner data consistently shows these engines running past 200,000 miles. If someone tells you "the 2.5L has timing chain problems," they're describing the older engine, not this one.
It's also refreshingly free of the things that fail expensively on other VWs of the era. No turbocharger, so no intercooler, wastegate, or boost leaks. Coil-spring suspension all around — no air struts or compressors. And the 09G six-speed automatic is a conventional torque-converter unit, not a dual-clutch or CVT, so it's well understood by every independent VW specialist and rebuildable if it ever needs it.
Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain?
A timing chain — not a belt. This is the single most common point of confusion on this engine, and getting it wrong changes the whole ownership picture. The chain is built to last the life of the engine; there's no scheduled "change the belt at 90,000 miles" interval, because there's no belt. It's a wear item to keep an eye on at very high mileage, not a deadline on the calendar.
The three things to check before you buy
- The PCV diaphragm. Built into the valve cover, it's the single most documented failure on this engine. When it tears it pulls oil into the intake and throws check-engine codes. Common, inspectable in the driveway, and inexpensive to fix — but confirm it before you negotiate.
- The transmission fluid. The 09G's valve body wears over time, and clean, serviced fluid slows that dramatically while neglected fluid accelerates it. A transmission that's never been serviced at this age is a real risk worth pricing in.
- The vacuum pump area. Its gasket weeps oil that pools under the engine and gets misdiagnosed as a far more expensive rear-main-seal leak. Knowing the difference is the difference between a cheap fix and an unnecessary big one.
What would make you walk
A few things flip this from "good car" to "walk away," and they're observable without tools:
- Milky residue under the oil cap. Coolant mixing with oil. Head gasket. Walk away.
- Blue smoke on startup or under acceleration. Worn rings or valve seals. Walk away.
- A metallic cold-start rattle that persists past 15–20 seconds. Chain or tensioner wear at the worst possible time. Walk away.
