Why it's a good car
This is the first-generation Cruze, and the base LS is the version to have. It uses the naturally aspirated 1.8-liter Ecotec four-cylinder (about 138 hp) instead of the 1.4-liter turbo that carries most of this generation's reputation for trouble — no boost, no intercooler, no turbo oil feed to fail. Parts are cheap and everywhere, it is one of the easier modern cars to service in your own driveway, and there is no systemic engine or transmission defect here. Every concern on this car is something a mechanic can see, confirm, and price.
Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain?
A timing belt — and this is the headline. The 1.8-liter Ecotec is belt-driven and is an interference engine, so if the belt lets go the valves meet the pistons and you are into major engine damage. GM's replacement interval is about 97,500 miles (roughly 157,000 km) or 10 years, whichever comes first, and the water pump is driven off the same belt and replaced with it. An older, higher-mileage Cruze with no belt receipt should be treated as due. (For what it's worth, the 1.4-liter turbo Cruze is also belt-driven.)
The things to check before you buy
- Timing belt service records Read the date and mileage on the receipt for the belt, water pump, and tensioner. No paperwork means assume it was not done and budget to do it right away — this is an interference engine.
- Coolant system The plastic thermostat housing, water outlet, and expansion tank go brittle and weep with age — the single most predictable thing this platform does. With the engine cold, smell for coolant and look for dried orange-brown crust around the housing and cap.
- PCV diaphragm and ignition coil The integrated PCV diaphragm in the valve cover and the coil pack are common causes of a check-engine light and rough idle. Cheap, but expect to meet one.
- Transmission The LS came as a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The automatic has no dipstick, so its fluid tends to get neglected — confirm which one it is and whether the fluid has ever been serviced.
- Oil and coolant mixing Pull the oil cap and check the underside for cream or mayonnaise; a known 1.8L oil-cooler seal quirk can let oil and coolant mix and mimic a head gasket.
- Rust On a salt-belt car, check the rear subframe, suspension mounting points, and the brake and fuel lines along the floor.
What would make you walk
- An overdue belt and a bad cold start No timing-belt history on an interference engine that is past its interval, combined with a rough or smoky cold start.
- Internal fluid mixing Milky residue under the oil cap or coolant disappearing with no external leak.
- Structural rust Flaking, scaling metal at the subframe or corroded hard lines — no cheap purchase price fixes a rotten structure.
