Why it's a good car

The 2016 Wrangler Unlimited is the four-door JK — the generation built from 2007 to 2018, and one of the last truly old-school vehicles of the modern era. Solid axles front and rear, a real lever-engaged transfer case, doors that come off. It is mechanically straightforward, the aftermarket and DIY community around it are enormous, and it depreciates slower than nearly anything on four wheels. Crucially, the 2016 has the right engine: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 (285 hp) with the revised cylinder heads — the early Pentastar head failures affected 2011–2013 engines, and the fix went into production in mid-2012, so this engine is well clear of that era.

Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain?

A timing chain. The Pentastar V6 is chain-driven, so there is no belt interval. The engine's watch-item is elsewhere — the plastic oil-cooler housing, covered below.
