Why it's a good car
The 2016 Civic opened the tenth generation — a ground-up redesign with a stiffer chassis and a grown-up interior that has held its reputation for nearly a decade. The LX and EX run the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four (Honda's K20C2, 158 hp), an engine owners describe in the most boring possible terms, which is the compliment you want: kept in oil, these routinely pass 300,000 km. It pairs with either a slick six-speed manual or Honda's own CVT, which — unlike the units that gave the technology its bad name — has a solid record when its fluid is serviced. The chassis, brakes, and electronics have no systemic weak point.
Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain?
A timing chain. The 2.0-liter uses a maintenance-free chain that Honda describes as lasting the life of the engine — no belt interval, no scheduled timing service.
The one documented issue: the A/C condenser
This generation's known defect is the air-conditioning condenser. A manufacturing flaw lets the condenser's tube walls corrode and develop pinhole leaks, and it happened often enough that Honda extended the condenser warranty to 10 years from the car's original purchase date. The modern refrigerant these cars use also makes A/C work pricier than on older cars, so a weak A/C on a test drive is a real number, not a footnote. Run it on full cold for ten minutes before you buy, and if the condenser does fail, check whether the extended warranty still applies before paying out of pocket.
Which engine to pick
The higher trims (EX-T and up) use a 1.5-liter turbo, which is quick and efficient but drew a Honda warranty extension for oil dilution — fuel finding its way into the oil — on 2016–2018 cars, mostly in cold climates with short trips. It is a managed issue, not a fatal one, but the naturally aspirated 2.0 avoids it entirely, which is why the LX is the version this page recommends for long-term peace of mind.
The things to check before you buy
- Air conditioning Full cold for ten minutes — genuinely cold air, no cycling. A weak system points at the condenser.
- Accident history The model has no structural weaknesses, so this is about the individual car: sight down the roof, pillars, and panel gaps in raking light, look for overspray on rubber seals, and treat any car with major claims as needing a body-shop check before purchase.
- CVT behavior Smooth, immediate pull-away with no shudder or slip, and a fluid-service record if the mileage is up there.
- Time-based items on low-mileage cars Many of these were barely driven — but brake fluid, coolant, tires, and batteries age by the calendar, so check date codes and service dates, not just the odometer.
- Rust On salt-belt cars, the usual underbody look at subframes and lines.
What would make you walk
- Bad bodywork Ripples in the roof or pillars, mismatched paint, or uneven gaps that suggest a structural repair done poorly — on this car, history is the risk, not the machine.
- A slipping CVT Shudder, flare, or hunting that persists after a proper fluid service.
- Structural rust Perforation at the subframe or floor pans on a salted car.
